Let’s decode a dial combination lock box!
Tools required: (1) decoder
Skill Level: low - medium
Success rate: high
Best option - full sized decoder or notched decoder.
EDC option - EZ decoder
Challenge option (shown here) - DIY decoder made from can or other thin metal.
Dial combination lock boxes can be decoded in the same manner as dial combination padlocks. But why decode it?
A 10 digit push button box, has 1024 combinations because each number can only be used once, and can be brute force opened in less than 45 minutes. However, a 4 dial combination lock has 10,000 possible combinations. Since that would take too much time, let’s just spend 2-3 minutes to decode it.
The technique is fairly simple. Insert your decoder to the left side of the wheel, far enough that the flat edge of the tool reaches slightly past the center point of the dials.
As you turn the dial, one digit at a time, there will be a small click seen and felt in the tool. When you reach the number that has been set for the combination on each individual dial, there will be a much larger deflection (movement) that can be seen/felt in the decoder.
Once you’ve done this for each dial, write down the 4 numbers. Test it. On some dial combination locks, it will open at this point, but don’t be surprised or discouraged if it doesn’t though. We have now found the notches that need to line up, but they are not necessarily in the right position to open.
Turn the dials, one at a time, up one number. Test again. If it still doesn’t open, repeat. In my experience, two numbers up is usually enough to open the lock. If you get all the way back around and it still doesn’t open, start fresh and make sure you’re confident in the numbers.
Trust the process.

The reason people make these videos is so that if YOU know, then YOU can take extra steps to secure.
It’s common knowledge that if it’s gonna take more than a few minutes to crack, they aren’t gonna stick around.
Also there might actually be an incident where you lose the keys/forget your code. I’ve locked myself out of my room before and being able to pick my own lock saved me an easy $200 in locksmith fees.
