What to do if your chicken has bumble foot!⬇️
Bumble foot is an abscess in the foot. It can either occur on the bottom of the foot pad or in between the toes on top of the foot.
If you have a chicken with a case of bumble foot it is best to treat it so it doesn’t worsen and lead to a bigger infection that can affect your chickens overall health.
This is our protocol when it comes to bumble foot:
➡️Make sure you have a clean scalpel and then lance the abscess. Squeeze out all of the infection and puss.
⚠️It is totally normal for there to be blood at this point. Most likely you’ll encounter hard chunks of puss like substances.
➡️After the incision wound is completely cleared we used some iodine and colloidal silver to clean the the area. You can also soak the foot in Epsom salt.
➡️Then wrap the foot with some vet tape. You can also use some gauze underneath the vet tape as well.
Bumble foot can become quite painful for your chicken. It can build up a lot of pressure in the affected area causing your chicken to start to hobble and limp around. As you can see during this little “surgery” the chicken was calm and happy for us to help her out. This did not hurt her.
➡️Leave the foot wrapped and check every 3-5 days and reapply the bandage as needed.
Have you ever dealt with bumble foot in your flock? Have you been able to treat it?

I would hesitate to do this myself. A vet could administer pain meds and possibly a more sterile procedure which could include stitches and definitely antibiotics. If you do this yourself you increase the chance of infection which could kill your bird. If you decide to do this procedure yourself, know the risks. Ideally, regular foot inspection could catch this before it advanced to this.
