This is nautical slang but has nothing to do with pirates.

No the ship speed is wrong, they would use a knotted rope to measure speed

In the south "obvious" it goes from jury rigged to n word rigged

Fun fact. The navy still uses the word scuttlebutt for water fountains.

  • @matthewbstrong 2025-03-21

All of that but you didn't explain the word knot as a measure of speed? You were so close. 😂 Great info though!

Because most of the common people descend from Pirates. Did we find it? The freedoms we searched for? The liberty from tyranny? Or did the monarchs simply find a different way to keep us bound?

Where’s the original of this video?

  • @skykibo 2025-03-09

The log with a rope to record speed was measured in Knots! Which is the speed unit used in Naval and Aviation

If you call somebody a "Toerag" that comes from the rag that was used to wipe your arse after pooing over the side of the ship, the rag was towed behind a ship on a rope to clean it after each use.

To add on to the log book fact, they would tie knots in the rope at a certain interval, and count the number of them that were dropping into the water per minute, which is why we measure the speed of a boat using knots
