In 2016, the ScanPyramids Project used muon tomography to identify a hidden corridor above the main entrance of the Great Pyramid of Giza. This advanced imaging technique, which tracks cosmic rays to detect voids, revealed a space approximately 9 meters (30 feet) long and 2 meters (6.5 feet) wide, located about 7 meters (23 feet) above the entrance behind the chevron-shaped stones.
To examine the chamber without damaging the structure, researchers inserted a 6-millimeter endoscopic camera through a small gap between the stones in February 2023. The footage revealed an empty space with rough stone walls and a vaulted ceiling.
The exact purpose of the corridor remains uncertain. Some experts believe it may have been designed to redistribute weight around the entrance or to protect a still-undiscovered chamber below. While its function is debated, the discovery highlights additional hidden spaces within the pyramid, encouraging further exploration.
