My understanding is that while the 508(c)(1)(A) rule is great, it's actually only for organizations the IRS considers a full-fledged church (or an association of churches). It's not for “faith-based” organizations but only actual churches. For example, if you're just a ministry, an online presence, or a religious organization that doesn't meet the IRS's long checklist (like having a regular congregation and established structure), you are a 501(c)(3) charity but you don't get the 508 benefits and must still file the annual Form 990 report. The 508 status is an automatic, special tax break for an established church not a ministry in general (which have broader definitions of operations). I’d like to hear your thoughts in reply, especially addressing the IRS definition of church vs ministry.
