Brown–Forman, an iconic American distillery company, has pulled back the curtain on the staggering taxes they pay to produce whiskey.
For every gallon of whiskey, the company owes the government $13.50.
A barrel at 125 proof contains 66 proof gallons, meaning each barrel comes with an $894 tax burden right out of the gate.
The company pays about $4 million in taxes per day, totaling $20 million each week and a jaw-dropping $1 billion annually.
And the kicker? Brown–Forman doesn't see a return on that investment until 4 to 7 years later when the whiskey is finally bottled and sold.
This eye-opening disclosure shines a light on the hidden costs of alcohol production and the lengthy wait for profits to materialize.

Well your product causes death, diseases, broken homes and broken people. I see no problem. They’ve been taxing alcohol since it’s invention
And to bring things full circle. Do you know why bourbon is the color it is. It is because of the aging process there is a thin caramelized layer between the outer wood of the barrel and the inner charred wood. It is this layer during the aging process which gives it its amber color. Now why is this well all whiskey if it wasn’t for the aging process would come out looking like moonshine. The reason for this color is the government needed a way to tell taxed whiskey from in-taxed whiskey. And hence the aging process and the color. Don’t believe me look it up.
Liquor is the devil so be it
Any time I hear a company complain about the amount of taxes they have to pay. I know that they’re doing very well. Also that 4 million doesn’t include the expenses that reduce the tax obligation.
Bust you still banged to make a shit load of money as you pass that taxation on to the customer in your pricing so….🤷♂️
It's called price of admission You can move somewhere else and make your whiskey Good luck
Damn shame and think it’s goes into someone political party pockets
Same as a tariff, who pays it?
13 dollars per barrel is not a bad tax on alcohol. its been higher before and even banned. they make enough money and spend it on politicians for us to worry about them
Is that half your profit in taxes?
@secscottbessent should pass this onto the SBA Administrator to fix this 🤦♀️ Ridiculous taxes -
And this is why there are still moonshiners
And it goes where?
On roads?
Schools?
Or into the pockets of politicians
