Milton Friedman noted that before 1914, immigration functioned well largely because there was no welfare system. Immigrants came to work and support themselves. In contrast, he argued that in a modern welfare state, immigration policy becomes more complex, as newcomers may have access to public benefits without necessarily contributing economically.

Homestead act? He is right society today is far more complex than in 1914. You could send people off to build a home (hut) in Wisconsin with their own bare hands & stake out a living on the land that was more or less GIVEN to them. But that does not mean that your country is not still built & sustained upon the backs of immigrants to this day. It is because of the hunger brought to your shores & your openness to their wares that the prosperity of your country has made itself too complex for open borders. That said, it still feeds off the same immigration sweat it always has. Forget that fact at your own peril. P.S Milts broad definition of welfare vs the everyman’s understanding of it is the crux of the bended reality that makes this argument appealingly populist.

Milton just didn't say the important thing out loud: immigrants are cheap labour. And that was needed in the industrialization of the US. Until 2016, before Trump, illegal immigration was basically okay, because it supplied the cheapest labour next to slavery. Now, the US will be facing a problem with their racist agenda (and that is all there is to it): who will do the work of those illegals who are now gone...
