College dean here - this is a great way to reduce costs and get ahead! However, please understand that each college and university has different policies with how these credits are applied depending on the degree. Many programs within a 4 year university will cap the number of credits taken as transfer or what we call “PLA”. To summarize, verify with the school and department what degree you plan on pursuing to ensure you know the requirements for the program.

I had a friend who "CLEPed" out of two years, went to a local college for another two, and got scholarships for his masters. Graduated with a masters in engineering at 22 for $15k total.

What about an adult? Been working, but would like a bachelor’s degree?

  • @terry.gossman 2025-12-21

Military has been doing this for 20+ years

This is free at your local Library. All Libraries. Now have online access. You have to pay for the test Proctor. So even if you are not near Houston, you can still CLEP

the only caveat is, they don’t contribute to your gpa, so if you’re trying to go to grad school, your upper level (harder) classes will be weighted higher. i got my associates and graduated with honors from community college, but then i got to uni and my gpa completely started over and it was only difficult upper level classes contributing to my gpa. now i can’t get into grad school.

    why?
As someone in their 50s, never once have I looked back on my life and thought… If I could’ve just have gotten to work two extra years, my life would be so much better.
You’re gonna work your whole life, getting started working for some MegaCorp, two years earlier,… What’s the point?

So are CLEP exams the new AP exams?

  • @samuell_ju 2025-12-29

Did 9 of these (1.5 weeks of studying each) of these they are way less effort than a class I recommend!

My daughters are taking community college courses. Can they take some CLEP at the same time in order to reduce costs? 🤔

  • @threeklove 2025-12-21

I did this back in 2004, tested out of several classes. This isn’t new information but thanks for letting others know about it.

Where were you 60 credits ago!! 😢 but appreciate the knowledge!! 🔥🔥🔥

  • @madison_royal 2025-12-27

Texas A&M Academic Advisor here. Please make sure that the credits actually apply to your degree. Great time about the free materials! Will pass this on to my students. :)

  • @nxt.eric 2025-12-21

If I’m not in Texas can I take the exam online?

  • @asbirdwell 2026-01-07

I took my very last class at Texas A&M with a human development psychology CLEP exam. I took it at home after studying for about two weeks. I passed the first time and then graduated the next month. This is the way to go to knock out as many extra classes as you can. Most of my other classes were in person so I still got the full college experience.
