What projects do you have planned for this year and why is a droid at the top of the list?
How do you build your own droid? Here you go!
The simplest answer is “after a lot of research”. Droids are very complex builds with many different build paths and techniques. Deciding which on is right for you is tough but also the first step! There’s TONS of awesome resources out there to learn from. Here are some of my favorites:
Astromech.net- the R2 builders club forum. The single best and most comprehensive knowledge source out there
R2 Builders Facebook group - tons of great info here but usually in smaller bite sized chunks and specific questions. Good place to see people going through their builds to pick up some general knowledge of the process
Mr. Baddeley Printed Droid Patreon and FB Group - a guy named Michael Baddeley has designed files to fully 3D print astromechs and other droids to share with the community. This is one of the cheapest build methods. The FB group is a fantastic knowledge source and to get the files you only have to pay $1 to join his Patreon.
Jason Charleton on YouTube - a builder I stumbled across that has videos covering his full build. I found the electronics ones to be especially helpful
ILikeToMakeStuff on YouTube - another channel that has videos covering a full build. I recommend watching these and Jason’s to illustrate how there is multiple ways to go about your build.
That was a bit of an info dump but it should get you moving in the right direction!

A long time ago, in a Marine hangar far, far away…
-—--Hoary Lore of the Marine Corps—---
On May 18th, 1977 during the Morning Formation of my fighter squadron, VMFA-451, the “Warlords”, our Commanding Officer LtCol R. Neel Patrick told us that there would be the premier of a new space-based sci-fi film at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort base theater, that it was free, and we should all be there.
I was seated 3RD row center!
After the Colors were presented and retired, a gentleman with all shoulder length curly black hair wearing a charcoal pinstripe suit, walked to center stage, nervously wringing his hands in front of a theater filled with seven fighter squadrons worth of uniformed Marines, and cautiously introduced himself as George Lucas, that they had worked very hard on this film for years and here are the stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill, and we hope you enjoy the show.
Star Wars rolled, and we were all blown away!
Finished my Rebels Chopper in the fall, hard time deciding which one to do next. An R5 derivative I think would be fun ;)
My favorite part of Star Wars. 🫶
Sending this to myself haha
My friend Grant Imahara and I were planning on building a DRD together before he passed. I still want to do this.
Just started mine as part as a new years goal!
Yooooooo! i need this
I would love to have one
Another one? Already?
Are you programming it with C++, Python?
What sensors are you using, ultrasonic...
Or is it remote-controlled... let me know.
Are you using AI, or is “Robi” completely autonomous?
:-)
