The reason why I think default file explorer is so huge in size is because it may carry the whole UI of the windows like if you close file explorer through task manager then your home screen and taskbar would disappear and your shortcuts would stop working. now, is the file explorer slow? Painfully and if it was removable without causing any harm then I would've removed it every time after installing windows
