49 years ago today, Three's Company made its debut on ABC.
But how many of you knew that before we all got to know Jack, Janet and Chrissy, there was David, Jenny and Samantha?
Larry Gelbart who was riding high with MASH at the time was asked to help write a script at the request of Fred Silverman at ABC. At first he balked at the idea thinking the synopsis was not of the same quality as MASH, but in the end changed his mind.
This pilot episode was filmed in 1976, but was scrapped in favor of other series that ABC felt had more promise. The show had to be remolded and ABC decided to base the series off the British show, Man About The House. They kept the Ropers and Jack, but recast Valerie Curtain and Susan Lanier.
The location for this complex is 5154-5158½ Fountain Avenue in East Hollywood,
This never made the air.

Sounds like a Sesame Street tune.
Jack, Chrissy, Janet and the Ropers/Mr Furley. That was my Three’s Company.
Who singing Ernie and Bert !!😂
And yet though it all, Fell's Fourth Wall was never in doubt 💪🏼
I had no idea that an alternate plot and introduction had been proposed. I loved Three's Company. Thanks for this bit of history.
The original was "Man About the House". It was British, and much better written.
This looks so weird. If I saw this, I wouldn’t have watched it as a series.
Valerie Curtin would’ve been great!
What a cute bungalow court apartment building-I’m happy to see it’s still here
So cool the property is still there! For rent at $1550
Think goodness they changed it
I remember this from when I bought the dvds when they first came out. I was “doo bee da dweeeebin” for two weeks.
I know exactly where this is and I never knew that was the same place. Wow.
This was a oretty good version also. Nice pilot
