WORD! A couple weeks ago, a freshman requested I write a letter of recommendation for her. I happily did because she demonstrated numerous qualities I could easily speak about during her one semester in my class. I said nothing about the grade she earned. They can see that on her transcript.

It’s only kissing up if you’re doing it to try and get something. But if you genuinely are grateful and curious, it comes through. And if someone has a problem with that, then you move on to the next person.

I’m a college professor and I’ve never expected a thank you note. We work for the students - it’s our job to help them.

Always send a thank you note. If anyone gives you their time, thank them.

Facts 💯 it’s really easy to stand out

This is so true! I think it’s one of my biggest frustrations as a Student Success Coach. You send emails to “invite”them to get help and improve in their classes but they do not respond. Or they do email and say they will come meet and they are a no-show. I continue to reach out as much as I can . I’m there to help my students.

Here's a follow up tip: This applies literally to every stage of your life, not just college. He's spot on. And I'll add one more thing, if you say you're going to do something, do it and do it right.

I once had a problem reaching out to my prof despite writing numerous emails to follow-up. Not sure what did I do wrongly? Maybe I addressed him inappropriately - as Sirs instead of Prof.

As a first generation college student things like going to office hours, finding mentors, developing a relationship with my professors outside of a classroom setting was completely unknown to me. SO much of what I learned in college was how to do stuff that seems super obvious when you’ve been privileged enough to understand these “little things”. For some of us, they are pretty big things to discover.

This is true in HS, college, and in life. It’s a whole life hack.

I made sure to say thank you to my architecture history professor because the way he taught was immaculate. (Even if I’m bad at taking exams) and I could genuinely listen to him talk all day. Love you Mr. Rugare! I wish I was an architecture student so I could take more of your classes!

So should I send a thank you email to my professor after the semester and I am about to graduate in few months

  • @nicoleavant 2026-04-23

    💯💯💯

Most students don’t understand the world is a competition. Always put your best foot forward to stand out. If you chose not to, that you are your own problem.
