Wooden hinge, metal free with bentwood rings as guiding elements.
This mechanical proof of concept explores the option to extend the back of the lid so that the hinge is covert and protected.
A fine balance between all material thicknesses and diameters is needed to achieve a strong and smooth hinge. Here, the 3.7mm wide and 20,3/25,3mm rings work great with the 15mm plywood.
The keys to make this work are precise bentwood rings with a consistent wall thickness as well as a way to make the correspondent cavitie precisely.
This one out of birch plywood works without the squeaky noises from the previous version in douglas fir- that's a big win.

As a designer and woodworker, I'm very pleased. I guess there are ways to bury the ring within the length of, say, a jewelry box. I'd be making mine with rings cut from plastic or metal tubing, l suppose. How do you cut your arcs ? Your precision is impressive and enviable !
That corner will wear down and it will be all floppy and lose over time. Great design
Make the fixed ring on the corner and you get an extra 45 degrees
my parents had a kitchen for 30 Years with wooden hinges on every cabinet and they never have failed. the hinges were mady out of solid oak, two rings from the cabinet and two from the door..
I feel like if its got a lot of friction, I'd end up snapping it off😭

Ether this is some ancient woodworking technique only learned after the woodworking gods have blessed your mind with knowledge an technique that is as old as woodworking. Or I’m witnessing new woodworking techniques and not just some new fancy BS tool genuine woodworking.

Very cool concept. No idea how you could get more of them dispersed throughout like a spiral bound book. Seems challenging, but something tells me you like challenges.
May wanna use alu or bronze as those rings, I imagine they snap easily
